Tis the season to be bitten. Fa la la la la, ouch, ouch, ouch, ouch!!!
If you’re a firm favourite with the mozzies and midges and you’re keen to keep them at bay this summer, then I would recommend investing in some good quality Lemongrass, Citronella and Eucalyptus. You can either add to a diffuser or make a spritz and spray your room and clothes.
The recipe I'm sharing today is one of my favourites and is adapted from Valerie Ann Worwood. I always make up a blend of these essential oils; then I add to oil, lotion or to an alcohol/water spritz. I've even added a drop to my shower gel when on holiday. The main thing is my biting friends hate it, which is why I love it!
However, should one of the pesky blighters manage to get a little bite before you’ve had a chance to apply, I would recommend initially applying a drop of neat Lavender to soothe the bite. To soothe bites, I also like to make a lotion or aloe gel which contains Lavender, and either Roman or German Chamomile (depending on severity of the reaction/bite).
As I’ve mentioned in previous Instagram posts; the Chamomiles contain a substance called Azulene which is a great ‘anti-inflammatory’. I also like to use my soothing blend or plain Lavender for stinging nettles, Because I can never work out which plant is traditionally used to soothe the itching!
So here’s my favourite insect repellent blend. Just remember never use this blend directly on the skin, and please, please, please never ingest them.
Here’s to a ‘bite free’ summer!
A 5ml or 10ml brown bottle with a plug insert
Add the following Essential oils to your bottle. Label and leave in a cool dark place.
40 drops of Lemongrass Essential oil
20 drops of Thyme Essential oil
20 drops Lavender Essential oil
20 drops Peppermint Essential oil
Then add 1-3 drops to 5ml of base, vegetable oil or alcohol/water spritz. Or add 5 drops to a diffuser.
